Next N.C. Concealed Carry Handgun Classes

When: July 24, Aug. 14, Sept. 4

What Time: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

What: The N.C. Concealed Carry Handgun Class is required by North Carolina law for all applicants for a concealed-carry handgun permit. Certificate of class completion must be presented to your local sheriff's office when you apply for your permit. Local sheriff's offices set application fees and times applications are accepted. Call your local sheriff's office for information about fees and application times available.

Where: Class meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Village Pawn & Gun Shop, 1207 E. Caswell St., U.S. Hwy. 74, Wadesboro, NC 28170. From 1:30 to approximately 3 p.m., live-fire qualification will be held at the N.C. National Guard Armory indoor range in Wadesboro.

Who: N.C. Concealed Carry Handgun Instructor John Myers will teach the class. To register call the gun shop 704-694-6266 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and ask for John Myers, or call 910-995-3975.

How Much: Class fee is $80 per student and includes certificate of course completion. If you do not have a handgun, John Myers will provide a .22LR pistol and 50 rounds of ammo for an additional $10.

If you purchase ammo, for an additional $20 you can use your choice of of concealed-carry revolvers or semi-automatic pistols supplied by instructor. For an additional $40, instructor will also provide 50 rounds of ammo with concealed-carry handgun.

Instructor-provided concealed-carry handguns include your choice from among the following options:

  • Revolver choices are .32 Long/.32 ACP/.327 Magnum revolver with Crimson Trace Lasergrips, .38 Special/.357 Magnum revolver or .44 Special/.44 Magnum revolver.
  • Compact and subcompact semi-automatic pistol choices include 9mm, .357 Sig, 10mm or .45 ACP.

    Note: If you wish to use instructor's revolvers or pistols for the class, you must contact John Myers in advance to arrange for use of his handguns.

    What to bring: Any caliber handgun, 50 rounds of ammo, eye protection (safety goggles or eye glasses) and ear protection (ear plugs or ear muffs). Ear plugs and safety glasses will be available for those who do not have their own.

    NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

    What: The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for owning and operating a defensive handgun safely and effectively. This course is 8 hours with 4 hours of classroom and 4 hours of live-fire range time. You will learn to safely and effectively shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. You can be a beginner or an experienced shooter. The class will be individualized to fit all students' needs.

    When: Available on Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by special appointment. I will schedule a class any Saturday I'm available for one or more students at a time, up to a maximum of 10.

    Where: 8 a.m. to noon, classroom instruction in the home of John Myers, 2020 Pinedale Road, Rockingham, NC. Call 910-419-9806 or 910-995-3975 for directions.

  • From 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., live-fire instruction at the John Lentz Hunter Education Complex at Millstone 4-H Camp, Millstone Road/Gibson Mill Road, Ellerbe, NC 28338. Telephone at range complex, 910-652-3859. For directions to the Millstone firing range complex from U.S. 1 or U.S. 220, call instructor John Myers at 910-995-3975.

    How Much: Class fee is $80 for students who bring their own handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition.

    What to Bring to Class:

    1. Semi-automatic pistol or revolver and 50 rounds of the correct caliber ammunition for your handgun. Ammunition should be Full-Metal-Jacket (FMJs) or Frangible range type.
    2. No live ammo allowed in the classroom! You are encouraged to bring your handgun into the classroom at 8 a.m., but be absolutely sure it is unloaded and leave all ammo in your vehicle until we go to the range for the afternoon live-fire portion of the class.
    3. Ear and eye protection. Ear protection should be ear muffs or ear plugs. Eye protection should be shooting glasses or safety glasses or if you wear prescription glasses, safety goggles that will fit over your glasses. Ear plugs and safety glasses will be available from instructor.
    4. Snack or sandwich for lunch if desired. We will have a short break for lunch if you wish to purchase a sandwich locally. Bring soft drinks or water in a cooler for the firing range.
    5. Payment for the class may be in cash or check, $80 if you bring your own handgun and ammo, $90 or $105 if you use the instructor's handguns and ammo.

    Students will receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and receive a NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course certificate upon satisfactory completion of the course.
